Range of motion (ROM)

Range of motion test from your phone: how far each joint really moves

Range of motion, or ROM, is how far a joint moves through a particular movement, measured in degrees. Libria measures it from your phone camera: you perform the movement, the app tracks the joint through it and records the largest angle it reached, then compares that with a provisional adult reference range. You choose the area — shoulder, neck, knee, hip, elbow or trunk — and the app walks you through every movement that area needs, each side separately: for the shoulder that is flexion, abduction, internal and external rotation; for the neck, flexion, extension, rotation and side bend; for the hip, flexion, extension, abduction and both rotations; for the knee and elbow, flexion and extension.

In a clinic, range of motion is measured with a goniometer, a protractor held against the limb. It is quick and useful, but it happens only when you are in the room. A phone measurement lets you take the same kind of reading at home, on the day it matters, and see how it changes as you recover or train.

Libria records a reading only when the movement was steady and clearly tracked. Each saved reading carries a tracking-quality percentage, and the report says plainly whether the angle sat below, within or above the reference range.

The movements Libria can measure

  • Shoulder package

Flexion (arm forward and up) and abduction (arm out to the side), plus internal and external rotation with the elbow bent at shoulder height. Side view for flexion and the rotations, front view for abduction.

  • Neck package

Flexion (chin to chest) and extension (looking up) from the side view, rotation (looking over each shoulder) and side bend (ear to shoulder) from the front.

  • Hip package

Flexion (knee to chest), extension (leg back behind you) and abduction (leg out to the side), plus internal and external rotation measured seated with the shin hanging.

  • Knee package

Flexion (heel to buttock) and extension (how fully the knee straightens), measured from the side view.

  • Elbow package

Flexion (hand to shoulder) and extension (how fully the arm straightens), measured from the side view.

  • Trunk side bend

Bending sideways at the waist, measured from the back view.

  • Reference range and quality

Each reading is printed with the provisional adult reference range it was compared against and the tracking quality of that capture.

When a range of motion test is worth doing

  • A shoulder, hip or knee feels stiff and you want to know whether it moves less than the other side.
  • You are recovering from surgery or an injury and your physiotherapist has given you a target angle to reach.
  • You want to see whether a stretching or mobility programme is actually changing anything.
  • You have been told you have a "frozen shoulder" or limited movement and want to track it between appointments.

How a Libria scan works

  1. STEP 01

Open the scan on your phone

No app to install. Sign in, choose the scan type, and prop your phone where it can see all of you.

  2. STEP 02

    Follow the on-screen guide

Three 10-second captures for posture, a short straight walk for gait, or one steady movement for range of motion.

  3. STEP 03

    Read your measured report

Every angle in degrees against a screening band, with plain-English explanations, as a PDF you can keep or send to your physiotherapist.

What a camera scan cannot tell you

  • It is an estimate from video, not a goniometer reading, and a different technique or camera angle can change the result by several degrees.
  • The reference ranges are provisional adult ranges for screening. They are not age-specific and not diagnostic; a clinician should confirm anything that matters.
  • It measures how far you moved, not why you stopped. Pain, weakness, stiffness and caution all look the same to a camera.
  • Do not push into pain to get a bigger number. Stop if a movement hurts, and tell your physiotherapist.

Questions people ask

How do I measure range of motion with a phone?

Choose the area in the app — say, the neck — and it lines up every movement that area needs as a checklist, grouped so you turn as little as possible. For each step it tells you the view (side view for flexion, front view for abduction), the starting position and the movement; you move slowly through your comfortable range, the app tracks the angle live and saves the largest steady reading, then moves you on to the next step.

What is a normal shoulder flexion range?

Reference tables for adults commonly give shoulder flexion of roughly 165 to 180 degrees. Libria compares your reading with a provisional range like that and tells you whether you sat below, within or above it, but your own comfortable range and your clinician’s judgement matter more than any single table.

Is this as accurate as a goniometer?

It is close enough to track change between sessions, and each reading carries its own tracking-quality figure. It is not a replacement for a clinician measuring you in person, especially for a surgical or legal record.

Can I measure both sides?

Yes. A package covers both sides by default, and the report lists left and right next to each other so you can see the difference. If only one side matters to you, choose it and the checklist halves.

What does it cost?

A Basic report is ₹99 and a Detailed report with a full written interpretation is ₹249. Packs bring the price down to ₹200 or ₹180 per report. There is no subscription.

Are my photographs stored?

Your photographs are processed on your own phone and are never stored on our servers. Only the measurements, the written report and your account details are kept.
