Back pain and posture
Back pain and posture: measure pelvic tilt, trunk lean and plumb line
Back pain is common and usually has more than one cause, and posture on its own rarely explains it. But how you stand does change how your spine is loaded, and it is one of the few things you can measure at home. Libria measures pelvic tilt, sideways and forward trunk lean, plumb line, weight shift and, in 3D, trunk rotation, from three phone captures, so you and your physiotherapist can see whether your standing posture is part of the picture. It costs ₹99.

A physiotherapist assessing back pain will watch you stand and move before touching anything: is the pelvis level, do you lean to one side, does your upper body sit forward of your hips, do you hold more weight on one leg. Those observations are exactly what a camera can measure, and measuring them turns an impression into a number you can revisit in a month.
The scan also measures how far you can bend to each side and how far you can lift each knee, which is a simple read on trunk and hip mobility, two things that are often asked about when the back hurts.
What Libria measures for the back
Pelvic tilt
Whether the line joining your hips is level from the front, in degrees, and which side sits lower.
Trunk lean, sideways
Whether your upper body leans to one side in standing, from the front or back view.
Trunk lean, forward
Whether you stand pitched forward or back, from the side view.
Plumb line
How well your ear, shoulder and hip stack over one another from the side.
Weight shift
Whether your hips sit centred over your ankles or you habitually load one leg.
Trunk rotation
Relative rotation of shoulders and hips, estimated in 3D. Depth is estimated from an image, so this one is read with more caution.
Postural sway
How much you move while trying to stand still, from the optional 15-second hold.
Trunk side bend and hip flexion range
From the range of motion scan, how far you can bend to each side and lift each knee.
When a posture scan is worth doing for back pain
- You have a dull, recurring lower back ache after standing or sitting for long periods.
- You notice you always stand on one leg, lean on one hip, or one trouser leg sits differently.
- You are starting physiotherapy or a core programme and want a baseline.
- You want to show your physiotherapist how you stand at home, not just in the clinic.
How a Libria scan works
- STEP 01
Open the scan on your phone
No app to install. Sign in, choose the scan type, and prop your phone where it can see all of you.
- STEP 02
Follow the on-screen guide
Three 10-second captures for posture, a short straight walk for gait, or one steady movement for range of motion.
- STEP 03
Read your measured report
Every angle in degrees against a screening band, with plain-English explanations, as a PDF you can keep or send to your physiotherapist.
What a camera scan cannot tell you
- A camera cannot see discs, nerves, joints, muscle or inflammation. It cannot tell you why your back hurts.
- Get urgent medical help, rather than scanning, if back pain comes with numbness or weakness in the legs, changes to bladder or bowel control, fever, unexplained weight loss, or follows a fall or accident.
- Posture is one factor among many. Stress, sleep, activity level and general fitness usually matter more than a few degrees of tilt.
- One scan is one moment. Standing posture varies through the day and with how you feel.
Questions people ask
Does bad posture cause back pain?
The evidence is weaker than most people expect: many people with "poor" posture have no pain and many with textbook posture do. Posture does change how the spine is loaded, and for some people a habitual lean or tilt is part of their pain story. Measuring it is a reasonable first step; it is not the whole answer.
What is pelvic tilt?
From the front, it is whether one hip sits higher than the other; that is what Libria measures. From the side, "anterior" or "posterior" pelvic tilt describes the pelvis tipping forward or back, which a camera can only estimate indirectly through forward trunk lean and plumb line.
Can I use this instead of seeing a physiotherapist?
No. Use it to arrive at the appointment with measurements, and to see between appointments whether anything is changing. If back pain is persistent, worsening or limiting you, see a physiotherapist or doctor.
How is the report shared?
Each scan produces a PDF you can download or email. Detailed reports include a written interpretation and annotated pictures; Basic reports print the measurements with plain-English explanations.
What does it cost?
A Basic report is ₹99 and a Detailed report with a full written interpretation is ₹249. Packs bring the price down to ₹200 or ₹180 per report. There is no subscription.
