Neck pain and forward head

Neck pain, text neck and forward head posture, measured from a side view

Forward head posture, often called text neck or tech neck, is when the head sits ahead of the shoulders instead of stacked over them. Libria measures it from a side-view capture on your phone: how far forward the ear sits relative to the shoulder as a share of your leg length, plus head tilt and shoulder level from the front. It takes about a minute, costs ₹99, and gives you a number to track rather than a feeling.

The head is heavy, and every centimetre it sits forward of the shoulders asks more of the muscles at the back of the neck. Hours over a phone or laptop tend to push it there, which is why neck and upper-back ache is so common in desk workers.

The trouble with judging it yourself is that you cannot see your own profile. A side-view capture does the seeing for you, and the plumb-line measurement tells you whether your ear, shoulder and hip line up or whether the head leads.

What Libria measures for the neck

  • Head carriage

How far forward the ear sits relative to the shoulder, as a share of your leg length, from the side view.

  • Head tilt

Whether your head sits level, in degrees, from the front view.

  • Shoulder level

Whether one shoulder sits lower, which often travels with neck tension on one side.

  • Plumb line

Whether the ear stacks over the shoulder and hip from the side, in degrees from vertical.

  • Neck side bend

From the range of motion scan, how far you can tilt your head towards each shoulder.

When a neck posture check is worth doing

  • You get neck, shoulder or upper-back ache after phone or laptop use.
  • You have been told you hunch, or you see a forward head in photographs.
  • You get tension headaches that start at the back of the head.
  • You are trying to change your desk setup or habits and want to see whether it is working.

How a Libria scan works

  1. STEP 01

Open the scan on your phone

No app to install. Sign in, choose the scan type, and prop your phone where it can see all of you.

  2. STEP 02

    Follow the on-screen guide

Three 10-second captures for posture, a short straight walk for gait, or one steady movement for range of motion.

  3. STEP 03

    Read your measured report

Every angle in degrees against a screening band, with plain-English explanations, as a PDF you can keep or send to your physiotherapist.

What a camera scan cannot tell you

  • A camera cannot see the vertebrae, discs or nerves of the neck, and cannot tell you the cause of neck pain or headaches.
  • See a doctor promptly, rather than scanning, if neck pain follows an accident, comes with numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms, or with dizziness, fever or a severe headache.
  • Head position changes minute to minute. A scan captures how you stood for a few seconds when asked to stand naturally.

Questions people ask

What is a normal forward head measurement?

Libria expresses head carriage as a share of your own leg length so that tall and short people are compared fairly, and screens it against an adult band of roughly 8 percent. Above that is flagged as forward. It is a screening band, not a diagnosis, and small amounts of forward carriage are very common.

Can forward head posture be corrected?

Many people reduce it with changes to desk and phone habits, strengthening of the upper back and neck, and regular breaks. A physiotherapist can give you a specific plan. Libria helps you see whether the number is moving.

Is text neck a real condition?

It is a popular name for forward head posture and the neck and upper-back ache that often goes with it, rather than a medical diagnosis. The posture is measurable; whether it is the cause of your symptoms is a question for a clinician.
